MUSCATINE, Iowa–Just after sunrise Sept. 14, the Muscatine Fire Department observed a moment of silence and laid a wreath at their firefighters memorial in honor of Michael Kruse. A member of the Muscatine Fire Department for 27 years, 53-year-old Michael Kruse died responding to a house fire Sept. 14, 2002.
19 years after Kruse’s death, Muscatine Fire Chief Jerry Ewer considered it as important as ever for the department to remember the life of their only member to die in the line of duty. “We need to honor Mike–our duty is not to forget,” said Ewer.
He also strives to have the department honor Kruse’s sacrifice each day by having firefighters keep themselves and each other safe so that they do, “not add another name to the memorial.”
