    Muskie Return to Learn Update
    July 14, 2020

    Hello Muskie Families and Staff:

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Clint Christopher, and I am the new superintendent of Muscatine Schools. My wife, Amy, and I are originally from the Quad City area but recently moved from Minnesota where I was the superintendent of schools for the last four years. We have three daughters. Our oldest will be attending college this fall. Our middle daughter will be a sophomore, and our youngest is going into 8th grade. We are all excited to be back “home” and to become a part of the Muskie family!

Throughout my career, I’ve focused on building relationships with staff, students, and the community. My focus will always be on doing what’s best for kids. Part of my role as superintendent is to build the capacity of the organization, from the classroom to the board room, to ensure we can deliver on the mission in Muscatine that “every student is a success story” even through a global pandemic. With that said, I’d like to now focus on what everyone wants to know, “what are we going to do this fall?”

Muskie Return to Learn Plan Update

Our intent is to bring students back to the classroom on August 24th as we know that in-person instruction is the environment where the majority of students learn best. The Return to Learn subcommittees are continuing their work as they look at instructional programming, interventions, and core instruction. Building principals are looking into social distancing for classrooms, hallways, lunch periods, recess, etc. A lot of work needs to take place in the next 30 days to ensure a successful start to this school year. The Return to Learn committee is continuing the hard work of defining solutions that will keep our students and our staff safe and healthy.

We know that there are families who are not comfortable sending their children to school this fall because of health reasons and concerns due to COVID-19. We also know that we have high risk staff that have the same concerns. Therefore, we will be offering those families an online option for their students that will follow our curriculum and standards and be taught by Muskie teachers. The online option will be more robust than this spring’s extended learning opportunity with required attendance by students. All students will have their own district-provided device, and we are currently working with our community partners to support families in need of wi-fi access. We ask that if you would like your child to participate in the online learning option, please fill out this survey as soon as possible so that the district can begin to plan for this educational opportunity.

We will continue to monitor information received from the governor’s office, the Iowa Department of Education, the Iowa Department of Public Health, Muscatine County Public Health, and the Center for Disease Control and will be prepared to do what is needed to educate our students in the safest way. Our number one priority is to have plans and procedures in place to keep our students and adults healthy in our building, so we will not have to begin a distance remote learning model for all of our students during the school year. We ask for your support and for grace as we move forward during this unprecedented time in the history of public education. Final plans will be communicated to you at the end of this month or early August.

    Stay safe, Muskies!

    Sincerely,
    Clint Christopher
    Superintendent

    Actualización para volver a aprender
    14 de julio de 2020

    Hola familias y personal Muskie:

Me gustaría presentarme.

    ¡Cuidensen Muskies!

    Sinceramente,
    Clint Christopher
    Superintendente
