MUSCATINE, Iowa–At the beginning of September, the Crossroads Day Habilitation program left their traditional home within the four walls of the Crossroads building for a new adventure of the Choices Without Walls Program. Trinity Episcopal Church, at Walnut and Second Streets, serves as a home base for the Day Hab program and has quickly become a true home for participants and staff. After a year of feeling cooped up and isolated everyone, is ready for a refreshing change.
This new Without Walls Program emphasizes community integration and activity choices each and everyday. Daily activity choices include volunteer opportunities with the Salvation Army, Muscatine Center for Social Action, and Senior Resources; health and wellness activities; park and community activities; and visits to favorite local coffee shops and restaurants. Many of these activities, right in the downtown area, include a walk down Second Street and always feature a visit to the patio area outside First National Bank. It was here that an unlikely friendship and snowball of events took place.
One afternoon during a visit to the patio, an employee of First National Bank, Nick Hays, came out to talk to staff and program participants. Worried that they would be asked to leave the patio, staff visited with Hays, but found sometimes friendships form in the most unlikely of places. Hays explained that the bank staff loves watching the Day Hab daily visits to the patio and Hays, having a background working with people with disabilities, loves watching participants enjoying the Muscatine community.
The goal of the Day Hab program is to enhance the lives of program participants and support them in reaching their greatest potential. The exciting outcome has been the lives of community members have also been touched by this program. Hays informed staff and participants that the bank staff would like to host a pizza lunch for the Day Hab program.
Planning the pizza lunch quickly took shape and has evolved into even more for the Muscatine community. Thursday, Sept. 30 from 9:30 a. m. to 12:30 p. m., Crossroads and First National Bank are teaming up for a very special community event to recognize National Love Someone Day. Employees at First National Bank and The participants of Crossroads Day Hab have recently developed a wonderful friendship, and Thursday they will be sharing the love by passing out cookies to any community member that stops by. So come by, say hi, grab a cookie, and share the love.
