Muscatine’s downtown is getting a vibrant new addition, thanks to mural artist Chris P. Anderson and his latest project at the corner of Cedar and 2nd Street, above the Ruhl & Ruhl building. This large-scale mural is a tribute to Muscatine, with its first phase featuring a “Welcome to Muscatine” sign inspired by the iconic Las Vegas welcome sign. The second phase will commemorate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, aligning with nationwide celebrations of the country’s founding.

For Anderson, this project is more than just a mural—it’s a reflection of Muscatine’s spirit, history, and future. As the lead artist behind “Paint the Pearl,” he has spent years transforming the city’s walls into works of art that celebrate its people, landscapes, and rich heritage. Now, he’s taking his passion to new heights with a piece designed to connect the community to a historic national milestone.

A Legacy of Public Art in Muscatine

Anderson has left an indelible mark on Muscatine’s streetscape through multiple large-scale murals that blend history, culture, and community pride. His most recognized works include:

  • The Muscatine Mural (2nd & Iowa): Featuring the Harvest statue, Beckey Bridge, Pearl riverboat, and the Merrill Hotel, this mural pays homage to the city’s riverfront identity and was completed in 2016 as a replacement for an older, deteriorating piece.
  • Muscatine Sunset Mural (Behind the Merrill Hotel): Inspired by Mark Twain’s descriptions of Muscatine’s breathtaking sunsets, this piece aims to capture the vivid colors that made Twain declare that “the sunsets are the best in the world.”
  • First Responders Tribute (Public Safety Building): A unique artistic contribution where fire hydrants were painted in dedication to Muscatine’s firefighters and police officers, symbolizing appreciation for those who serve.
  • The Pearl Dragon: Created as a celebration of Muscatine’s long-standing friendship with China, this oil painting was unveiled at an event for Hebei Governor Wang Zhengpu and embodies the city’s historical significance in the pearl button industry.
  • Grant Elementary School Leadership Mural: A collaborative effort with students and teachers, this mural promotes the Leader in Me curriculum and encourages young minds to embrace leadership qualities.

Each of these works tells a unique story, and Anderson’s newest project at Cedar and 2nd aims to tie together both local and national narratives

What Makes This Mural Special?

A New Landmark for Downtown Muscatine

The mural’s “Welcome to Muscatine” sign will serve as a visual landmark for visitors and locals alike. Much like how the Las Vegas sign has become an icon, this mural will greet and celebrate the Muscatine community, highlighting its small-town charm and rich history.

A Tribute to America’s 250th Anniversary

The second phase of the mural will recognize the United States’ 250th birthday on July 4, 2026, an event being honored with celebrations across the country. Muscatine’s mural will be a patriotic tribute, showcasing American pride while reinforcing the city’s role in shaping Iowa’s past and future.

A Community-Powered Art Project

Unlike many public art initiatives that rely on large grants or municipal funding, this mural will be funded directly by the community. Anderson is inviting Muscatine residents, businesses, and art lovers to take part in the project by donating through Venmo or supporting in other ways.

Strengthening Muscatine’s Creative Identity

Public art is more than just decoration—it’s a cultural investment. Anderson’s murals have played a vital role in revitalizing Muscatine’s downtown, drawing visitors, creating conversation, and fostering a deeper sense of local pride. This latest work continues that mission, ensuring that Muscatine remains a city known for its artistic vibrancy.

How the Community Can Get Involved

Anderson’s mural projects thrive on community support, and this one is no different. Residents and local businesses have several ways to participate:

A Special Thanks to Community Partners

Chris P. Anderson extends his deepest gratitude to Muscatine Downtown Investors and Discover Muscatine for their role in getting this project off the ground and for their continued support. Their commitment to fostering public art and community engagement has been instrumental in making this vision a reality. Anderson recognizes that it takes a collective effort to bring large-scale projects like this to life, and he is grateful for their dedication to making Muscatine a more beautiful and culturally enriched place.

Looking Ahead: A Historic Unveiling

The mural is already taking shape, with the first phase well underway. Over the next year, Anderson will continue expanding the artwork, layering in historical references, community symbols, and patriotic imagery to tie Muscatine’s story into the larger American narrative.

By the time July 4, 2026, arrives, the mural will stand as a symbol of unity, history, and celebration—not just for Muscatine, but for the country as a whole.

Chris P. Anderson’s vision, combined with the support of Muscatine’s residents, is bringing another masterpiece to the city’s streetscape—one that will tell a story for generations to come.
