Muscatine is set to welcome a new Senior Center at Musserville Church, located at 1001 Oregon St, with its grand opening scheduled for May 6th. This initiative, driven by a 2023 feasibility survey highlighting the need for a centralized hub for seniors, promises to enhance socialization, wellness, and leisure opportunities for residents aged 60 and over.
The center, spearheaded by community volunteers and Senior Resources, aims to become a vibrant gathering place for active aging adults. “Our vision for the Senior Center is to establish it as a vibrant social hub for seniors in our community,” said Ed Lampe, an advisory board member and volunteer. “While we will open with a proposed activity schedule, our focus in the inaugural year will be on tailoring programs and operating hours to best serve our participants.”
The center will offer a variety of activities including exercise programs, crafting sessions, card games, and the ever-popular bingo. Special interest speakers will also be featured to engage and educate the attendees.
In anticipation of the opening, the community is invited to the Aging Adult Resource Fair on April 26th from 10 am to 1 pm at Musserville Church. This event will provide an opportunity for attendees to tour the center, preview upcoming programs, and gather resources from other community organizations.
To support the ongoing success of the Senior Center, a donation drive is currently underway, with opportunities for community members to contribute as founding members by donating $1,000 or more. These funds will aid in establishing a structured membership model, set to be introduced in January 2025, which will include monthly, annual, individual, and household memberships to ensure the center’s sustainability.
Volunteers are also being recruited to assist with operations, activity planning, and outreach efforts. “We’re calling on the community to help make this center a cornerstone for our aging population, providing them with a space to stay active, connected, and engaged,” stated Megan Francis, a contact for the initiative.
