Shout-out to the legendary band, The Guess Who, and their song “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature” for the inspiration for the title of this week’s column. Friends, as you are reading this, I have had nothing sweet in over a month. That includes; cookies, cakes, real ice cream (I did have some Rebel ice cream that is Keto friendly, with no real sugar), or candy. I’ve also been back on the intermittent fasting train (not eating from 8 p.m. until 12 p.m. the following day), and I’m pleased to report that I have lost nearly 30 pounds since January.
Now, I have quite a bit of weight to lose, and I lose it rapidly when I adjust my diet. I’m not doing Keto or Paleo or following any specific diet. I’m also not restricting myself when we’re out to eat and have enjoyed chips and salsa, etc. I’m just trying to do better, and I have to tell you, the feeling of having to tighten your belt or a pair of pants that were snug is the best.
Readers of this column know I have struggled with my weight for a long time. I’m not ashamed to admit it. I know I’m overweight; that’s nothing new to me. However, I struggle with staying the course and being mentally strong enough to do so. Do you know how hard it was standing inside a Whitey’s Ice Cream or Tee’s and not getting a cookie dough shake?! Those things are the best, and I’m not saying I won’t ever enjoy one, but, for now, restricting myself is working.
My wife, Kasey, and I have also been meal-prepping (shout-out to her for doing the majority of that–it’s so appreciated) and have enjoyed a nice variety of meals. We’ve also started going to the Muscatine Community Y with the kids. That’s an excellent way for them to burn off energy while we do the same. I’ve thought about reaching out to an actual nutritionist and asking questions about staying the course with a lifestyle change.
One thing that I have done is not weigh myself every day. I know that if I were to do that and not see any movement in the number on the scale, I could use that to justify eating something that I’m avoiding.
I have a goal weight in mind and would love to achieve that before the end of the year. If you’re on a similar path, I wish you well, and please, if something is working well for you, let me know via email at [email protected].
