MUSCATINE, Iowa–For 85 years, the Port City Coin Club has hosted a coin show each year, except for in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A time for experienced hobbyists to indulge in numismatics, or collecting coins and other currency, and for newcomers to explore it, the Port City Coin Club encourages everyone to attend this year’s event held March 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rendezvous (3127 Lucas Street in Muscatine).
A good-sized coin show, the Port City Coin Club anticipates that more than eight vendors will attend this year’s show, bringing at least 22 tables of wares with them. Coin collectors will find many sorts of United States coins and paper currency from all eras, both silver and gold bullion, coin collecting supplies not typically found in Muscatine, unique items such as medals, scrip, and tokens, and possibly even international currency as well. With items in all price ranges and from many time periods, collectors both new and experienced will find items that appeal to them.
Throughout the day, the club will sell raffle tickets for an 1881 $5 gold piece from the United States as well as other items. With the purchase of raffle tickets, people can get, while supplies last, a special wooden nickel in honor of Jim Burr, a dedicated member and leader of the Port City Coin Club until his death in June 2022. All attendees have the chance to win hourly door prizes, and children under 18 can get free goodies, such as coins and books specially selected for them. Anyone may enter the show for free.
A great place for people to come together to buy, sell, and have currency appraised, Port City Coin Club member Nevin Roberts hopes to see a good turnout this year. Most of all, he looks forward to seeing current and aspiring coin collectors come together and form friendships around their hobby. “One of the nice things about coin shows is that you often get to meet up with collector friends from other towns and clubs as well as to see what is new and of course find something you need for your collection and hold it in your hand and examine it before you buy,” he said.

These meetings take place at Musco Lighting, located at 2107 Steward Road in Muscatine, the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., except for in the months of June, July, August, and December.
