MUSCATINE, Iowa–Each summer, supporters of the Muscatine Community Y’s children and teen programs spice things up at the Missipi Brew (108 Iowa Avenue in Muscatine) with the annual Lip-Sync Battle. An evening of larger-than-life performances, the Brew’s tasty food and drinks, and lots of love for the Muscatine Community Y, you can join the fun on June 20 from 5 to 9 p.m.

An event suitable for all ages, the Lip-Sync Battle features two divisions, youth and family, which will perform from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and adult and corporate, which will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. In each category, individual or group performers will lip-sync to songs of their choice and complete their acts with fun dance moves and colorful costumes. With many kids and individual adults performing, Muscatine Community Y Character Development Director Amy Hessel wants to see more companies put their heads together and perform numbers in the adult and corporate division.

If you would like to perform in the Lip-Sync Battle, Hessel encourages you to sign up by visiting the Y’s website, emailing her, or visiting the Y’s front desk (1823 Logan Street in Muscatine) in person by the end of the day June 16.

Everyone may come and vote for the performances of their choice at this free event. The Y will present awards for best solo act, best group act, best costume, and best song choice in each division. Those wanting to support their chosen performers further may purchase additional votes from Y staff members. “If we can get a lot of people in the seats, it makes it much easier,” Hessel observed.

Throughout the evening, the Brew will donate 20% of all food and drink sales to the Muscatine Community Y. A silent auction and raffle will provide other ways for people to support the Y and possibly come home with something fun.

An event that has only grown in popularity over the years, Hessel hopes community members will continue to support it generously so that it can raise at least $2,500 for kids and teens programs. This money will meet many immediate needs, including helping to keep kids club registration fees as low as possible, providing events on days students do not have school (such as Nerf wars over spring break), providing transportation for field trips for summer day campers, and ensuring that popular programs like the Togetherhood community service group, Ready, Set, Drone!, and Workout with Weights can continue.

A high-energy event enjoyed by everyone who performs and attends, Hessel urges everyone to support the kids and the many youth programs the Y has available. “It makes my heart so happy to see kids get up there and do it for so many people they don’t know,” she beamed.
