MUSCATINE, Iowa–For just over 60 years, the Pilot Club of Muscatine has helped the local community in numerous ways, supporting individuals with special needs and brain injuries through a variety of programs. To allow them to continue their efforts, they hold a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, including cookie sales around the winter holidays and selling concessions at Masonic bingo games. This August and September, they look forward to bringing back one of their tastiest fundraisers, their Scratch Cupcake sale.

An easy fundraiser for people to get in on, the Pilot Club will have several different types of six packs of Scratch Cupcakes available for sale. These will include fan favorites such as a chocolate variety pack, candy topped cupcakes, and ones particularly appealing to kids, such as dirt cup ones with gummy worms, just to name a few.

The Pilot Club will take cupcake orders from Aug. 15 though Sept. 2. If you know a member of the Pilot Club, you can ask them for guidance for how to order online or with a paper order form. If you do not know a member of the Pilot Club but would still like to get cupcakes, you may call Pat Castle at 563-571-0029 to speak with her or leave a message to get your order started. All cupcakes will arrive in Muscatine on Sept. 16. The Pilot Club member who you purchase your cupcakes from will let you know if your cupcakes will come directly to your house or if you will need to pick them up. “This is probably the smoothest fundraiser I’ve ever done,” said Castle, who has assisted with the Scratch Cupcake sales in the past.

The funds from the Scratch Cupcake and the other fundraisers the Pilot Club will hold this year will make a number of different service projects possible. “It’s supporting individuals in Muscatine with special needs and individuals with brain injuries–it’s a big part of what we do,” Castle emphasized.

The Piot Club plans to purchase replacement supplies for Riding for Success, a program that provides therapeutic riding opportunities for children with a wide variety of special needs. Additionally, they will complete their project of redoing the landscaping at Harmony House. The Pilot Club will also continue their support of Special Olympics of Muscatine as well as of Mississippi Bend Trykes, which builds customized trikes for children with special needs, allowing them to build motor skills and get around in a way that meets their particular requirements. Additionally, Pilot Club members also visit local nursing homes, especially those with memory care units to work with those residents, and make little gifts for caregivers to show their appreciation.

This year, Castle estimates that all of the Pilot Club’s various projects together will cost between $8,000 and $10,000. Through the cupcake sales and other efforts, she hopes to meet or exceed this goal so that the Pilot Club can continue making a difference in the Muscatine community.
