Spring Cleanup Help for Seniors
by Senior Resources
April 21, 2021

MUSCATINE, Iowa–The Coronavirus pandemic has continued to throw a wrench in events and programs we have depended on for years.  While we anxiously await the return to beloved events, we are seeing many endure a 2nd year of cancellation.  The United Way Spring Student Day of Caring is one of these events. This event has traditionally transported groups of students all over Muscatine to provide yard cleanup and spring cleaning projects to senior homeowners in Muscatine. Due to the continued safety mitigations, and the health and wellbeing of our students and staff, the event has been postponed another year.  However, the clean up projects remain a need throughout our community, and the Senior Resources staff is thinking outside the box to meet this need.

Staff members from Senior Resources and Crossroads teamed up for a cleanup day to kick off the Spring cleaning season.  Staff split into 2 groups to assist 7 homeowners with projects including mulching, window cleaning, leaf and weed removal, and yard clean up.  The projects are not extensive but can cause a strain and safety concern to elderly homeowners.  “It was nice to get out and provide this service for our neighbors.  We were fortunate to have a gorgeous day and the appreciation shown by the homeowners made for a truly rewarding, team building experience” said Deputy Director, Megan Francis.

There are more homeowners that still need this yearly clean up service, and Senior Resources is working with additional volunteer groups from the United Way, ISU Extension Office and students completing volunteer hours to work through the list of projects.  If your group is looking for a service project and would like to be matched up with a few homeowners needing help this Spring, call Senior Resources Outreach coordinator, Laura Vargus at 563-263-7292 or email her at bilingual@sr-resources.org
