I love when others can inspire us to want to do more. I’ve been fortunate in my life to come across quite a few folks that, from day one, impressed me with their willingness to serve others. That includes the outgoing Salvation Army of Muscatine Lieutenants Greg and Liz Bock, who will be heading to Michigan at the end of the month.
When Greg and Liz arrived in Muscatine, the Salvation Army was ready for a kick-start of energy and excitement. I’m convinced that Greg literally sprinted to Muscatine upon learning they would be assigned here. Their entire family hit the ground running and embraced the Pearl City as their new home. We knew all along that this would probably not be the last stop on their journey. As their friend, I am truly sad to see them go, but I am more grateful for all the positive things they did for Muscatine while they were here, and I know they will do the same in Michigan and beyond.
Let’s be honest; the Bock’s have to be getting close to being promoted to captains with the Salvation Army. During their time in Muscatine, they not only met their Red Kettle Christmas goals but exceeded them. They increased programs offered to the community and raised the overall awareness of the Salvation Army in Muscatine by 1,000% (at least).
I’ll never forget during what had to be the first advisory board meeting when the Bocks arrived, listening to Greg explain why having a giant red kettle was the right thing to do. You know what? He was right. That kettle has become a beacon of hope along with Greg’s temporary home (keep in mind he literally slept inside the kettle for weeks during December). I know that the Bock’s would want everyone in Muscatine County to know just how much they have appreciated the support for their family and, of course, the Salvation Army.
So, what’s next? Well, Lieutenants Lucas and Macy Gantner have arrived in Muscatine and are ready to get to work leading the Salvation Army! I had the honor of meeting them last week during an open house event, and I’m thrilled that they’re here! Lucas has already stated that he will indeed take up the mantle of sleeping in the giant red kettle in December! My hope is that you’ll continue supporting the Salvation Army and all the ways they support the community.
To Greg and Liz, thank you for being my friends and for working hard during your time in Muscatine. You’ve made a lasting impact on my life, and I know we will keep in touch. If anything, I think we should all pack a bus and take a ride up to Cadillac, Michigan to visit the Bock family.
