Every winter, the West liberty Area Arts Council sponsors art classes, primarily for adults. Since in-person classes are unwise during the pandemic, the classes are going online this year. They will be offered free in consideration of pandemic-induced tight budgets. All classes will take in March. Titles, descriptions, and times are as follows:
1. Welcome to the Fold, taught by Duﬀy DeFrance (artist, poet, retired librarian)
Learn basic origami skills as you make a variety of ﬂowers for a “Spring Garden Collage.” Instructor Duﬀy DeFrance has taught this class at the Muscatine Art Center, the Discovery Center, College For Kids, at at libraries. Flowers include roses, tulips, and sunﬂowers. The class will meet in two 90 minute Zoom sessions.
1st session: Wednesday, March 17, 4:00-5:30: Flowers
2nd session: Wednesday, March 24, 4:00-5:30: Stems, grass, a rabbit, a frog, and creating your collage. Open to anyone aged 8-98!
2. Making Soft-Sculpted Dolls and Creatures, taught by Monica Leo (Puppeteer/ designer, Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre
Learn to make a soft-sculpted doll or creature of your own design! Make a child’s doll, a spirit guide, a creature of any kind. Learn to create your own pattern, sew, stuﬀ and assemble, and add details by needle sculpting. Monica, director of Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre, is skilled at demystifying and simplifying seemingly complex processes so anyone can feel comfortable doing them.
1st session: Tuesday, March 9, 6:30-8:00 PM: Make your pattern; cut out your pieces
2nd session: Tuesday, March 16, 6:30-8:00 PM: Sew your pieces together, stuﬀ, and assemble
3rd session: Tuesday, March 23, 6:30-8:00 PM: Needle sculpting, adding hair and eyes
4th session: Tuesday, March 30, 6:30-8:00 PM: Dressing and completing your creature
Open to anyone adept at using a sewing machine!
3. Fiction Writing, taught by Chuy Renteria (author, dancer, artist, storyteller, teacher raised in West Liberty)
Are you interested in writing and telling a story? Have you always wanted to write and didn’t know how to start? Or maybe you have been writing but want to explore the process in a laid back and inclusive environment? Join author and West Liberty local Chuy Renteria for at home classes on ﬁction writing. This four part workshop covers creatively thinking of potential stories and how to best approach and reﬁne them for yourself. For adults and teenagers, but all levels welcome.
