WEST LIBERTY, Iowa–As the days get shorter and the nights longer, holiday lights bring much needed joy to this dreary part of the year. The West Liberty Chamber of Commerce hopes to encourage festive decorating and safe local shopping through their holiday lights decorating contest and several special, socially distanced shopping days.
Following the success of their scarecrow contest in the fall, the Chamber decided to hold a holiday lights contest as well. Any resident of Atalissa, Nichols, or West Liberty may enter by sending their address to the Chamber via email or Facebook message. Then, on the nights of Dec. 18-20, they must have their lights on from 7-10 p.m. Volunteers from the Chamber will drive past each display and announce the winner Dec. 21. The winner will receive $300 in Chamber Bucks, which they can spend at a variety of businesses in the area.
Along with the holiday lights contest, the Chamber also plans to hold Take Out Thursday Dec. 10 and Jingle Don’t Mingle shopping days Dec. 18-19, giving shoppers opportunities to get Chamber Bucks, both by entering photos of receipts into a drawing and through surprise on the spot giveaways. Through these events, West Liberty Chamber Director Stephanie Martin hopes to spread good will and encourage local shopping. “We just really want to spread as much holiday cheer this year as possible,” Martin said. “All small businesses can use all the help they can get this year. We want to help our members as much as we can,” she added.
