MUSCATINE, Iowa–In 2021, the Muscatine Humane Society and For Pets’ Sake developed a novel fundraiser to benefit the animals and families they served during the difficult days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pleased with its popularity, the organizations planned to make it an annual event, only pausing due to the death of Scott Hendricks, one of the founders of the band “Lefty and the Spinners,” the band that made Woofstock possible, in 2022. This August, the Humane Society and For Pets’ Sake plan to revive Woofstock Aug. 5 at the Muscatine Humane Society (920 South Houser Street in Muscatine) and invite music and animal lovers alike to join them at 5 p.m. for a night of music, food, and fun.

Lefty and the Spinners, one of Muscatine’s most beloved local bands, will play throughout the evening. With a repertoire of 60s and 70s classic rock that earned them a spot in the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they promise to keep audience members’ toes tapping all night long. In good weather, they will play outside. In case of rain, they will perform inside the Canine Activity Center directly next to the Humane Society. The Activity Center will also house a silent auction with items sure to interest all in attendance. The Rick’s Ribs food truck will allow concertgoers to purchase food and drinks as they get hungry. Attendees need only bring their tickets, lawn chairs, and anything they plan to spend for food and the silent auction to have a good time.

Tickets have gone on sale, and people may purchase them for $25 apiece at several locations, including the Humane Society, Becky’s Bow Wow Boutique (1512 Isett Avenue in Muscatine), and Zoomiez Doggy Daycare & Kennel (720 Clay Street in Muscatine). Those who buy tickets before July 1 will receive an exclusive Woofstock 2023 t-shirt. Though some shirts may remain after July 1, organizers have only a limited supply and encourage people who want one to purchase their tickets sooner rather than later.

All of the proceeds from Woofstock will go to support projects at the Humane Society and For Pets’ Sake. The Humane Society plans to add new kennels to their stray animal wing. For Pets’ Sake will put their portion towards purchasing new tires for and making needed repairs on their bus. The bus allows For Pets’ Sake to bring pet food, cat litter, and other supplies to their monthly supplemental pet food pantry.

As the second Woofstock benefit concert approaches, Muscatine Humane Society Director Chris McGinnis knows people will have a good time furthering the Muscatine Humane Society and For Pets’ Sake in their work to help animals in Muscatine County: “Woofstock is a night out, food, drinks, and music on a Saturday night. It’s entertainment for local people, listening to a much-loved local band and supporting local homeless animals. I would encourage people to come to have a great night out and support a good cause as well,” she urged.
